Each generation of each model in the database is assigned to a decade based on its launch year, then averaged with all the other generations from that same decade, across all manufacturers and categories combined. The sample is not exhaustive of the global car market: it reflects the models currently referenced in the comparator. The trends (growth in width and height, in particular) remain nonetheless consistent with what is generally documented about the evolution of car size.
The power, CO2, consumption and acceleration charts do not go as far back as the 1950s like the 4 size charts: this information is not available for all of the oldest generations in the database, and a decade is only shown for a given metric if at least 3 distinct generations have that data — no estimated or interpolated value below that threshold. The "Sample size" chart shows, for reference, the number of generations used to calculate each point on the other size charts for the corresponding decade.
